The Litigation pod at Klaris Law is seeking a dynamic and skilled mid-level associate (3rd to 6th year) to join our 20-lawyer, media and intellectual property-focused law firm based in New York City. This role is designed to support a number of contested matters as well as pre-publication/pre-broadcast review of content. This position offers a rare opportunity to engage in significant copyright, First Amendment, and newsgathering litigation work, as well as commercial matters associated with the media business.
What You will Do
- Support and manage litigation matters.
- Engage in federal and state court proceedings and in arbitrations.
- Conduct legal research and draft briefs.
- Manage discovery processes, take depositions, and ultimately appear in court.
- Collaborate with senior attorneys and clients to develop case strategies.
- Multi-task and adapt to incoming matters.
- Collaborate closely with partners and clients, receiving real responsibility early in your career.

What You Bring
- 3-6 years of relevant litigation experience.
- A demonstrated interest in media or IP is a plus.
- Proven experience in federal and state courts.
- Clerkship experience is a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cases, either independently or under supervision.
- Exceptional writing skills and proficiency in legal research and brief writing.
- Some discovery experience.
- Ability to multi-task and think quickly in a fast-paced legal environment.
- A proactive, self-starter with a commitment to excellent client service.

The annualized salary range for this position in New York City is $160,000 to $185,000. Actual pay will be adjusted based on the candidate’s education, training, experience and other job-related factors permitted by law. Full time employees are eligible for a bonus and health insurance with an optional HSA, dental insurance, vision insurance, long-term and short-term disability, life insurance, FSA, 401(k), up to 15 Paid Time Off/Vacation days and 9 paid Federal holidays each year plus sick time and entitlement leave.

Role description:
This position primarily will support the firm’s transactional practice. In this role, the associate will have the opportunity to have direct client relations, refine their drafting and negotiating skills and act as a legal counselor and advocate.
Responsibilities:
The associate will be responsible for structuring, drafting, negotiating and analyzing agreements primarily on behalf of media and entertainment companies. Representative engagements include the following:
● Editorial content procurement and publishing, including serial rights, book embargo,author, artist, licensed content and stock house agreements;
● Content production, including development/shopping, co-production, production services,option purchase, host and talent, distribution and ad sales agreements;
● Mediabrand and content licensing;
● Sponsorships,including for live events, podcasts and other media;
● Event production;
● Media distribution, including through streaming, linear and social platforms;
● Television programming;
● Social media marketing, including influencer engagements;
● Marketing services for events, loyalty programs and other brand activations;
● Brand integration and custom content programs;
● Insertionorders and addenda to IAB standard terms for media ad buys;
● Advertising technology relationships, including ad serving and delivery, yield optimization and monetization, targeting and audience data, and measurement and verification;
● IT and tech support services, including SaaS, PaaS and IaaS agreements;
● Data licensing, including data processing agreements;
● Counseling on laws and regulatory guidance governing influencers/social media, native advertising, sweepstakes and contests and cause-related marketing; and
● Advisingon the use and monetization of new technologies, including GAI products.
Basic qualifications:
● 2+ years of transactional experience at a law firm and/or in-house (at least 1 year at a law firm); and
● Active license to practice law in New York.
The ideal candidate will have:
● Demonstrable and genuine interest in the media and entertainment businesses;
● A background in one or more of the following: intellectual property licenses; technology transactions; entertainment agreements; advertising and promotionslaws; data privacy laws;
● The propensity to be a self-starter, with strong interpersonal skills;
● The ability to translate complicated legal principles into clear, concise English;
● A talent for streamlining negotiations, and a keen desire to find common ground while protecting the client’s interests;
● The aptitude to provide practical and creative advice;
● A passion for the law, an inquisitive mind, and a desire for excellence;
● Enthusiasm for juggling many matters simultaneously; and
● Interest in joining a boutique law firm with a strong culture of collegiality, autonomy and focus on client services.
